Here’s some new, and important, info on the Pine Hollow Fire that’s burning near Kanab, Utah. You can also follow Bureau of Land Management - Arizona to make sure you’re getting a full scope of what is happening.

Due to extreme fire conditions and fire suppression activity currently in the area of the Pine Hollow Fire, and in the interest of public safety, the BLM Arizona Strip and Paria River Districts issued official temporary fire closure orders for public lands located approximately 20 miles east of Kanab, Utah.

These areas will be temporarily closed until rescinded. Please visit the following website for more detailed information on the fire and the closures.

WARNING: UNPOPULAR ANIMAL POST

Alright folks, it’s likely that many of you hold no gentle or kind feelings toward the animal featured in this post. However, (Ranger Anna here) I do!

Snakes are one of the most fascinating and stunning creatures in the animal kingdom! They come in every color combination you can think of, including pink! The Grand Canyon Rattlesnake or Pink Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus abyssus) is an animal that visitors are not likely to encounter—you can exhale now.

Thick-bodied, rough-scaled, and beautifully patterned, this gorgeous snake is ready to bite—rodents! Despite popular opinion, this snake, while venomous, is not a “bad” snake. Yes, it can defend itself, yes, it has incredible camouflage for the area it lives in but no, it is not out to ruin your day. Rattlesnakes are so disinterested in creating conflict with large animals like us, they go to great lengths to make sure it doesn’t happen, like fading into the background, slithering away, and the most well-known method is rattling their tail. And what a tail indeed!

How perfect a defense mechanism...imagine, if you will, you are having a troublesome day, you haven’t eaten, you’re a bit hot, you decide it’s a good time to rest under a shady tree. Suddenly, someone comes up to you, a close-talker, interrupting your peace and quiet. To signify that you aren’t really in the mood, you pull out a maraca and start shaking it wildly. That would be weird but probably effective. That sound was loud, disorienting, confusing and the person just pauses, dumbfounded, and walks away. That is the desired result for the snake. If it can let you know where it is and that it isn’t interested in you coming any closer (in this case because of fear), it can be spared any further negativity.

So watch your step, if nothing else, because the terrain here can be uneven and difficult to walk on and also, just in case a snake might be resting nearby.

Following guidance from the White House, CDC Centers For Disease Control, and state and local public health authorities, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is increasing recreational access and services.

Beginning Friday, July 24, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will reopen access to:

✅ Entrance fee booths at Antelope Point.

Beginning Friday, July 24, at 8 a.m. (AZ time), Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s concessioner Antelope Point Marina will reopen access to the following services:

✅ Boat rentals
✅ Marina store
✅ Marina business boat ramp for Antelope Point Marina customers only.

Beginning Wednesday, July 29 at 8 a.m. Antelope Point Marina will reopen access to:

✅Grandma Betty's Restaurant for Take-out Only

The Antelope Point Marina is located on the south side of Lake Powell near Page, Arizona. Please visit them for a comprehensive list of their facilities.

With public health in mind, the following facilities and operations remain closed at this time:

❎Antelope Point Public Launch Ramp

❎Some concessions operations continue to be temporarily suspended.

❎Some park facilities and areas are temporarily closed. For more information, please visit go.nps.gov/GLCAcurrent

While these areas are accessible for visitors to enjoy, a return to full operations will continue to be phased and services may be limited. When recreating, the public should follow local area health orders, practice Leave No Trace principles, avoid crowding and avoid high-risk outdoor activities.

The National Park Service is working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. At Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, our operational approach is to examine each facility function and service provided to ensure those operations comply with current public health guidance, and will be regularly monitored.

This summer, we have had a surge in visitors swimming, fishing, wading & camping in waters/areas that are closed to these activities, to include many marina areas. These areas are closed to swimming to help prevent injuries to yourself, visitor & park property and natural resources.

Specifically, swimming and wading is prohibited in areas around boat launches, marinas, docks and any other place signs are present. With 1,000 miles of shoreline, there is ample amount of beach space, with several developed beach areas. Please stay out of the clearly marked "no swimming" zones.

Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? It’s got great food... but no atmosphere!

Today is National Moon Day. It celebrates the first time a person – Neil Armstrong – walked on the Moon, back in 1969. NASA has described this day as being the “single greatest technological achievement of all time.” You won’t be able to see the moon tonight, because the Moon phase is a new moon – but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate! There are plenty of astrological phenomena happening right now in our night sky. The stars and the Milky Way will look even brighter due to the darker night skies that the new moon brings. You may even catch a glimpse of the NEOWISE comet, which will be the closest to earth on July 22nd and 23rd. Located directly below the Big Dipper, the NEOWISE comet can be seen just after sunset.
